Tips For Training Your New Puppy

Dog Symptoms No Comments »

Making a plan needs to be at the top of your priority list when you start training a puppy, as it will make a big difference when relocating a young dog or puppy to his new strange new world from his comfy and secure home with his mother. It is a very stressful and worrying event for a puppy during the first few days of leaving his mother and playmates, and he finds himself in new and unfamiliar surroundings where there is nothing but unfamiliar people and strange smells.

And it’s not just puppies and young dogs. It happens with older dogs to - they can get depressed by everything new that happens to them when they get relocated. You need to be constantly reassuring your dog when you move him to a new home; he’ll just notice that his friends are gone and he doesn’t recognize anything.

If humanly possible, try to get to know your new puppy before he moves in. This way you are not a complete stranger to him when you pick him up. So, when you get round to, training puppies the familiarity between you will result in a quicker learning experience. I appreciate this is not always possible so, you can always take a piece of his current house to his new home, like a blanket or toy of some kind or anything that will help the dog adjust to his new surroundings and get used to being in an alien environment without the familiar smells and faces.

The best time to bring a new puppy or dog into your home is any time when you’ll be able to spend a few full days at home with him. During the holidays is ideal - providing of course you’re at home and not on vacation. The more time you can spend with in these first few days the better. Being there for him in those first few days will help him settle in and help the newcomer get over his homesickness blues. This is very important when your starting to train a puppy, as he needs to learn the ground rules from day one, but also needs company while he settles in.

In the same way that we humans make preparations for a new baby, by creating an environment to satisfy the baby’s needs and requirements, training a puppy should be just as exciting. As a new dog carer, you need to prepare your home in just the same way. After all, your new puppy is a new member of the family.

A sectioned-off area in the kitchen or bathroom is the ideal place to start your puppy off, as your puppy house training regime will go much smoother as well because any accidents are easier to clean off hard floors. Normally, the kitchen makes a great new home due to the high traffic and background noise, which helps prevent your new dog from getting lonely.

Your puppy had lots of friends and familiar faces at his old home. Since they’re not there any more he’ll get lonely so your new job is to become his new playmate. But don’t overdo it because he can’t be allowed to live by his own rules for his first few days in your home and then lay down rules that prevent him doing those things when you start training him. Training a puppy can begin with the easy techniques, but needs to start as soon as he moves in.

Letting him doing his own thing at first is unfair, simply because your rules aren’t consistent. The processes we use in training a puppy are equally effective when working with older dogs, in pretty much the same way. Adult dogs can also suffer from homesickness when you move them. It’s not only puppies. When you bring a new dog home he or she will need to learn the rules from the start. All dogs need discipline and affection in equal amounts. But the rewards are more than worth it.

Separation Anxiety- Another Dog Repair Fix

Dog Symptoms No Comments »

Separation anxiety is a symptom of an insecure dog.    Most dogs, when left by themselves, find a secure spot and wait for your return, sleeping most of the time your gone.  A dog suffering from separation anxiety becomes extremely anxious. as you are preparing to leave and upon you return, in some cases.  The dog exhibits behavior which include some or all of the following, chewing, barking, salivating, urinating, defecating, vomiting or chewing through walls, scratching through doors, busting out of cages or digging under fences if left outdoors.

Dogs are pack animals, who rely on the pack for their protection.  Dogs that lack self confidence appear to have this problem.  They have not been taught what to do when you leave.   They lack the foresight to know that you are coming back.  This can be due to problems from a previous owner or from being left for long periods of time without preparing the dog first.

I recommend what has worked for me and my dogs.

If you have the time, exercise your dog before you leave.  A dog that is exercised has less stress and tension, the same as when you exercise.  Thus, a dog that is tired is less likely to become stress out as you leave.

I confine our dog when we leave.  At first, we left for just a few minutes, like going next door to talk to the neighbors.  Just start with short periods of time and gradually extend it out a few hours.

If we are going to be gone for a short time, a couple of hours or less, I place him into his crate.  Actually, he goes in on his own as he sees us preparing to leave.   A crate is a wonderful tool for training your dog in such things as housebreaking and separation anxiety.  It quickly becomes your dogs safe place.

If we are going to be gone for longer than a couple of hours I partition off a room for him.  This is made possible by being the leader of the pack.

As the leader, it is up to you to show your pack what is acceptable behavior. When we leave we just leave, we don’t make small talk, like we’ll be right back in baby talk or anything of that nature as that tends to get your dogs agitated, raising the level of stress and anxiety.  When you prepare to leave just go about your business, expect your dog to be okay while you are gone.

When you return home, don’t make over your dog.  If he is anxious or excited, wait until he settles down before you let him out of his crate.  This will train him to what kind of behavior is expected.

This is what has worked for our family, many times over the years.

What To Do If Your Dog Has Eaten Chocolate

Dog Symptoms No Comments »

We all know what a delight chocolate is to us.  Well, as dog owners we also know what a hazard it can be for our dogs.  They love the stuff!

There are two ingredients, caffeine and theobromine, in chocolate that acts on dogs to make them sick.  This can run from just diarrhea, vomiting, to death.   As owner, it is our responsibility to make sure our pets are safe.   It is important to remove things that hurt your pet from their reach; to remove the temptation, so to speak.   The other thing you can do is to train your pet to wait until things are offered before they start digging into them.

That being said, if you discover your dog has eaten chocolate of some kind, you should immediately try to determine how much chocolate was eaten and how much your dog -weighs.   The reason for this is, if your dog has eaten more than one ounce of chocolate- per pound of his weight then he is in danger.

You should try to get your dog to vomit (Call ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 for advice) and take him to your vet immediately.

With a little bit of care we can enjoy our chocolate and know our dogs are safe, too.

Seperation Anxiety And Dogs

Dog Symptoms No Comments »

I Wish They Would Come Home

When you leave the house, it is nice to know that your dog goes to his favorite spot and sleeps peacefully until you return. However dogs suffering from seperation anxiety are not so lucky. Seperation anxiety can appear in dogs that have not been properly socialized, dogs that have been moved from one home to another and dogs that are naturally nervous.

Your dog is a social, pack animal who relies on the others (you) for individual protection and security. Dogs that lack confidence, due to socialization issues, understanding of expected behavior, or possible maltreatment in the past (adopted dogs), are more likely to exhibit behaviors related to seperation anxiety

Essentially, when you leave to go to work, or even just to the corner store for five minutes, you dog becomes upset, stressed and confused. Seperation anxiety and dogs can do everything from whining and barking, to ripping apart your couch and eating your duck feathered pillow.

How do I know if my dog has Seperation Anxiety?

There is much debate over the cause of separation anxiety. some believe it is a lack of confidence that causes the dog to rely to much on their humans. In this case, you have to teach your dog to accept the fact that you are leaving, and it’s going to be ok.

If you have a dog with separation anxiety, you will know. Dogs will usually exhibit a combination of the following:

- The behavior often occurs when the dog is left alone.

- The dog makes a big deal when his owner leaves, or comes home.

- Well left alone the dog will exhibit behavior which is not common to his normal behavior.

- The dog may not eat if the owner is not in the room

- The dog will follow his owner around constantly

What ever the cause is, here are some techniques for solving the problem.

What can be done?

Make your Departure and Arrival Routine

Make your dog realize that your departures and arrivals are nothing to get excited over. Usually the dog feels the greatest amount of anxiety shortly after you leave. Therefore you need to practice with your dog the “routine” of coming and going.

Lots of Exercise!

Exercise is believed to relieve stress in both humans and dogs alike. A long walk, run, or play session prior to leaving can go a long way in helping to reduce the stress and anxiety of your dog.

Give Your Dog Something to Do While You Are gone.

If your dog has something entertaining to do while you are away, he will be less likely to become stressed and anxious. A stuffed Kong filled with a tasty treat is an excellent example.

Confine Your Dog While You Are Away

Some dogs are more comfortable being confined to their own Aden. A crate is an ideal space for your dog. A dog who is properly crate trained is less susceptible to get in to trouble while you are gone. If a crate is not an option, confine him to one room or limit access to the whole house.

Introduce Another Dog

If your dog has another companion to keep him company while you’re gone, it may help alleviate the boredom and tension caused while you are away. Of course this is only “one” option. There are many other factors to take into consideration before adding another dog to your home.

Set Aside Time For Four Dog

Make time during your day to give undivided attention to your dog. This time can be spent playing, teaching, or even just taking a nap together. If possible, try to make this one-on-one time prior to departures.

Leave the Radio or TV On

Leave a radio on in a separate room. The dog will hear the voice and will feel less alone. Some people even leave voice recordings of themselves in hopes to calm the dog.

Depending on the severity of anxiety, you may need to contact a behavior specialist through your vet.

Pain Relief Treatments For Dogs

Dog Symptoms No Comments »

Pain Relief Please!

There are two main medications that Veterinarians usually prescribe for pain relief treatments in dogs.  These two canine pain relief treatments are Rimadyl and Metacam.  Both of these medications may have moderate to severe side effects for your pet.  These are controlled medicines that can only be purchased with a prescription.

Rimadyl - Rimadyl (Carprofen), is produced by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and was introduced into the market in January 1997.  It has proven to be an effective means of relieving arthritis pain in dogs. Since it’s introduction there has been serious concern about the side effects of the medication.  Many pet owners have reported death of their pets due to adverse reactions to Rimadyl.

When my dog needed relief from her arthritis my Vet suggested that we use Metacam instead of Rimadyl due specifically to the large number of side effects with Rimadyl.

Metacam - Or Meloxicam is an NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and is closely related to ibuprofen.  My Vet likened it to ibuprofen on steroids (although there are no steroids in it).  It was suggested that Metacam was a far safer (yet more expensive) choice than Rimadyl.  I found my Lab Brussel tolerated it very well and could not identify any side effects from it.  The only downside I could see was the money.  It should be noted that Metacam can be used to treat other painful conditions including injuries, surgery and cancer.

ArthroIonX - ArthroIonX is a mineral complex that has been formulated to help repair damaged joints and tissue in pets caused by arthritis.  This pain relief therapy for dogs is not known to have any side effects for pets and is available without a prescription. The all-natural ingredients used in ArthroIonX can dramatically reduce the symptoms of arthritis in pets.  ArthroIonX contains no artificial additives, chemically generated compounds, or artificial additives.

Treatment Of Hemolytic Anemia In Dogs

Dog Symptoms No Comments »

Hemolytic Anemia

The following therapies are used in the treatment of hemolytic anemia in dogs. However, it should be noted that each dog diagnosed with this disease will tolerate each treatment in a different manner.

DRUG THERAPY

The cornerstone of treatment for hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is the drug prednisone. Prednisone is a corticosteroid drug that suppresses the immune system. Very high doses of this immunosuppressive drug are given initially in an effort to stop the destruction of red blood cells and thus induce a remission. It can take about 5-7 days for prednisone to start to work. The minimum dosage of prednisone given at the onset of AIHA is 1 mg per pound of the dog’s weight per day divided into two dosages. Some clinicians will prescribe an even higher dosage for dogs with a very low PCV. The dosage of prednisone should be tapered off very slowly over many months. The aim is to get the dog to the lowest maintenance dosage possible or off the drug completely. Some adverse side effects associated with prednisone usage are; increased thirst and urination, increased appetite resulting in weight gain, increased panting, muscle weakness and increased susceptibly to infections due to the suppressed immune system. Long term prednisone use may result in liver damage. Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid drug, which is five to seven times more potent then prednisone is also used in the treatment of AIHA. Some veterinarians advocate giving corticosteroids at least one week to work before adding other drugs to the treatment regimen while other veterinarians prefer to add cytotoxic drugs at presentation.

If steroids alone are insufficient, more potent immunosuppressive drugs such as azathioprine, sold under the brand name Imuran may be added. Imuran is a “second-line” or “slow acting drug.” Clinical response may require up to 6 weeks. The principal adverse effect associated with Imuran is bone marrow suppression. Acute pancreatitis and hepatotoxicity have also been associated with Imuran. Because Imuran depresses the immune system, animals may be susceptible to infections or neoplastic illnesses (long term use).

Another potent drug used in the treatment of hemolytic anemia in dogs is cyclophosphamide sold under the brand name Cytoxan. Cytoxan may be used in cases with severe hemolysis and agglutination. The usual manner in which Cytoxan is given is daily for 4 consecutive days per week, stop for 3 days and then repeat. Because of the potential for development of serious adverse effects, Cytoxan should only be used in patients who can be adequately and regularly monitored. Primary adverse effects in animals associated with Cytoxan are bone marrow suppression, gastroenterocolotis (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) alopecia (hair loss) and hemorrhagic cystitis.

Danazol is a drug primarily used as an adjunctive therapy with corticosteroids (such as prednisone) in the treatment of canine autoimmune hemolytic anemia. There is apparently synergism when Danazol is combined with corticosteroids for this purpose. Once remission is attained, some dogs may have their Danazol dosage reduced or other medications may be eliminated and the disease may be controlled with Danazol alone.

BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS

Blood transfusions can be used in dogs with hemolytic anemia if necessary. However, adding foreign protein can actually intensify the crisis state, increase the amount of bilirubin and other breakdown products the liver must process and suppress the bone marrow’s natural response to anemia. If blood transfusions are given, they should be done only in a life threatening situation and then done with great caution. The blood must be typed and crossed matched to avoid further sensitization and exacerbation of the problem.

HUMAN INTRAVENOUS IMMUNOGLOBULIN

Human Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVGG) is a blood product administered intravenously. It contains the pooled IgG immunoglobulins extracted from the plasma of many human blood donors. IVGG is used in humans for many conditions and has been used in some cases of canine AIHA/IMHA when the patient does not respond to other therapies.

SPLENECTOMY

Splenectomy, the surgical removal of the spleen, is occasionally recommended for cases of autoimmune hemolytic anemia that have been nonresponsive to other forms of treatment. This surgery benefits the dog in two ways; less antibodies are made against the red blood cells and the primary organ responsible for the destruction of the red blood cells is removed.

Dog Parvo Symptoms

Dog Symptoms No Comments »

dog with parvo symptomsThe healthiest thing you can do for your puppy is to make sure that he has Parvo Virus immunizations as soon as he is at the right age for it. Also, make sure to attend follow-up visits and boosters as recommended by a qualified animal doctor.

Parvo Virus in Dogs acts quickly to debilitate the digestive system. You will need to work promptly if your dog begins to vomit, experience a loss of appetite or thirst, or have continuous diarrhoea. This is an emergency situation for your dog because he is rapidly dehydrating and literally drying up inside. Your canine may die within hours of you noticing dog Parvo illness symptoms.

Not all dogs experiencing digestive disorders are suffering with the Parvo Virus. There are some distinct signs that you will notice in the dog’s symptoms and behaviour that indicate more likely than not that he is certainly infected with this deadly virus or an illness that is just as life threatening.

• The dog has diarrhea and is unable to control where he deposits his faeces. The faecal matter will have a strong foul odour and most likely be very watery and yellow in colour, it may also be laced with visible blood and have a strong scent of blood or decay.

• The dog is starving of thirst. He may approach his water bowl and whine or cry and you will identify that he is thirsty but isn’t drinking from the bowl of water. He may lie down near the bowl or in common cases he may fall over into the water and be too weak to stand.

• The dog may seem disoriented, lost, or confused. Instead of the usual greeting of a wagging tail from the dog, he may only acknowledge you with a slight raise of his head and a glance at you and then lay his head back down. You may notice that he appears to be lost as he decides to get up and walk to a new location and then seems to change his mind as he turns around and walks back to where he was previously and just lays back down.

• The dog will not eat. He has a complete loss of appetite because his digestion system is in such turmoil from the Parvo virus attacking his intestines. He will not accept food. He recognizes the distress of being starved, but is in so much pain that he cannot do anything about it. He will appear to be poisoned or have symptoms like a human does when suffering from food poisoning.

For the most part, dogs live a long healthy life. However, it is vital that you pay heed to the dog’s illness symptoms whenever you notice him acting strangely. It is especially important to take action in cases where he refuses to nourish and hydrate himself, cannot hold anything in, or seems very weak.
